Is it possible to eat well in Airports?

After the nastiness of a long flight squeezed into budget end of the aircraft it is a huge relief to find real food in the most unlikely of places... international airports.

Changi Airport T2 upstairs food court

There is a food court there which has a series of small stalls aimed at the locals and reflecting Singapores amazing cultural diversity. We caught the train from Terminal 1 there on advise from one of the airport workers.

The stalls included Southern Indian (passing the basic authentisity test of being solely vegetarian), Hakka Chinese stlyle poached chicken, chicken rice and pork noodle soups. There was also a couple of Malay kitchens with nasi lemak.

My dish for all of $7 singapore dollars included;

  • crispy fried chicken wing

  • dry fried whole small fish

  • a spiced fish pasted grilled in Pandan leaf

  • Ikan Billas (tiny dried fish with peanuts)

  • Sambal

  • Fried egg

  • Taro cake

  • and rice.

Jimmy ordered the poached chicken which came in the traditional manner with rice, soup and a little steamed green choy sum.

Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food

Terminal 5 Heathrow Airport London

Had a proper restaurant feel about it with a nice fitout and good service.

Reasonable espresso, good quality bacon, eggs and condiments. Great bloody mary and an interesting 'breakfast martini' made on orange juice, orange marmalade, and vodka.

Plane food also had a range of take away meals packed in little cool packs to take on your flight.
